Hi there, I’m Brittany.
After losing my mother in 2018, I quickly learned that, because death and the act of dying in general can be such a taboo topic, a lot of us aren't actively talking about what we want when we pass away and generally educating ourselves on what our options are. It's scary, even for me - someone that openly and casually discusses death before ever touching on politics or religion.
I will never forget the days following my mother's death. We had so many decisions to make from the moment we found out she died until she was buried. If you've been through this, you know. Endless phone calls, financial decisions, where to keep the body - and ALL while in an active state of shock and grief. It is impossible to make educated decisions because you're mentally unable to conduct research and even if you mentally could, you don't have time because everyone needs to know NOW what is happening with the deceased. It's a nightmare. I knew from this experience alone that I wanted to work in this industry so that I can be a supportive and patient influence through the planning process because we did NOT have that as we planned my mother's funeral. I wanted to make it my life's purpose to be sure that families are loved, heard, and supported without judgement through this time of grief. There is no right way to grieve and there is no right way to plan a funeral. This is and should be an intimate celebration of the legacy that one leaves behind but also a time for their loved ones to process whatever emotions come with that transition with support and love.
As a certified death doula, I am able to support families before, during, and after the death of a loved one. I help educate both the ill and the well about the many options we have for funerals and burials, I help with funeral planning from a calm mind to and allow families space to figure out what they need and want during this time, and most importantly, I hold space and support people without judgement as they explore and decide what a "good death" looks like for them. As a certified death doula, I get to be the person that my family so desperately needed during this excruciating time.
